Weetwood Through the Years...
Long before Weetwood became one of Toowoomba’s most anticipated racedays, it was the name of a grand residence neighbouring the racecourse. Built in 1888 for Richard Scholefield, a prominent supporter of the Toowoomba Turf Club, Weetwood House would lend its name to one of Australia’s oldest sprint handicaps.
On 6 June 1895, Zulu claimed victory in the inaugural Weetwood Handicap, beginning a racing tradition that would span generations. Such was the importance of racing to the local community that Toowoomba businesses closed for half-day holidays during the Turf Club’s two-day carnival.
From those early beginnings, Weetwood has grown into one of Queensland’s most celebrated regional racing events. Today, it continues to bring together exceptional racing, fashion, hospitality and community spirit, carrying more than 130 years of tradition into every new chapter.
