Corey, Kylie and Gary Geran combined for a memorable hometown triumph in the Weetwood Handicap with Let’sfacethemusic.
It was a family affair in Saturday’s Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) with local trio Corey, Kylie and Gary Geran taking out Toowoomba’s sprint feature with Let’sfacethemusic.
That’s with Corey and Kylie preparing the horse as co-trainers while Gary was the man in the saddle, booting home a feature-race winner at 54 years of age after coming out of retirement last year.
Back in December of 2023, Geran called time on his career in the saddle after around 35 years of riding.
But the retirement only lasted just shy of two years with Geran making a comeback at Birdsville in 2025, and in the last 12 months he’s booted home 39 winners.
Corey, who is the son of Kylie and Gary, was over the moon to secure the feature win on his home track but mostly for his parents.
“When he kicked on the corner like that I didn’t think they would beat him and he sprinted away from them,” Corey Geran said.
“I’m just very happy for my dad and my mum too. For dad to ride a Weetwood winner and for us to do it as trainers is just tremendous.
“I’ve won Listed races before but that’s probably the pinnacle and to do it with my Dad, that’s probably his first Weetwood winner as a jockey at 54 years of age.”
Let’sfacethemusic led the field up at a strong tempo, had a strong kick at the top of the straight and nothing could go with him.
Originally a $475,000 purchase at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Let’sfacethemusic was on-sold earlier this year with the Gerans snapping him up online for$47,500.
Saturday’s victory was the five-year-old son of I Am Invincible’s fifth for the stable but Gary Geran said it hasn’t been easy work with the horse.
“We’ve put a lot of work into this horse just to get him to come back just a fraction and you can’t man handle him too much,” Gary said.
“We let him do what he needs to do and he’s got a good understanding of me and at the 600m, he was travelling so sweet and I knew there would have to be Bernborough to beat him.”
Cosmic Fire ($9.50) ran on for second while promising four-year-old Brave Monarch ran up to his namesake, sticking on gamely to run third with 60kg on his back.
Meanwhile, drama unfolded before the start when Millane reared in the barriers and was subsequently withdrawn from the race.
Millane was actually passed by the vets but his jockey Daniel Moor wasn’t deemed fit to ride.
It left Queensland’s premier trainer Tony Gollan, who grew up in Toowoomba, without a runner in the 2026 renewal of the race.
Gollan famously won the Weetwood for the first time in 2024 with Hidden Wealth after attempting to win the race for more than a decade.
