Toowoomba trainers Corey and Kylie Geran will target a home track victory in next month’s 1Equine Weetwood with Let’sfacethemusic after the gifted gelding scored at Doomben on Saturday.
The Listed Weetwood Handicap has eluded the pair since beginning their training partnership in 2019, with a fifth place finish with Our Magnus in 2023 their best result to date, but co-trainer Corey Geran hopes Let’sfacethemusic can change all of that.
“We’ve had minor placings in the Toowoomba Cup the last three years with Nikau Spur, but the Weetwood has been a race that we’ve never really had a decent sprinter in, and this horse is definitely the best chance we’ve had,” he said.
“Our plan was ideally to win on Saturday and boost his rating up, which nearly guarantees him a run.”
Let’sfacethemusic, which has won four of his eight starts since coming from Victoria, settled outside leader Moulin Miss over the Doomben 1110-metre journey before surging clear late to win the XXXX Class 6 Plate by over a length.
“The Weetwood will be five weeks between runs, so we will probably give him a trial and maybe an exhibition gallop before then, but it’s all systems go towards the Weetwood for him now,” said Geran.
While victory in the Weetwood would be a sentimental one for the local training partnership, Geran explained the race also fits in well with the longer-term plans for Let’sfacethemusic.
“Obviously, it’s the pinnacle of racing in Toowoomba, so it’s always a race you want to win,” he added.
“But we wouldn’t be going there if things weren’t right with the horse and I think it works out really well for his prep.”
Let’sfacethemusic, a $475,000 yearling purchase, is likely to be spelled after the Weetwood to target a race on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast on January 16.
“He had his first start here at Toowoomba in a class one, carried 63kg, drew a wide barrier and everything was up against him, but he’s a classy horse and won easily,” said Geran.
“He’s a classic example of letting fast horses be fast because he just hates to be taken hold of. If you try and take a hold of him, that’s when he does things wrong.”
“I think the 1200 metres at Toowoomba suits the horse very well and he’s obviously trained here which is a big positive.”
Corey and Kylie Geran also prepared two winners at Toowoomba on Saturday night in what was a big day for the trainers.
